n December 2025, within Qingdao FTZ, relying on the world's largest marine biological resource center established by BGI North Center, Qingdao MGI Tech Co., Ltd. released two standards within a week. It achieved dual breakthroughs in the field of deep-sea biological materials with the "release of both international and national standards," marking significant progress of Qingdao FTZ in the standardization of marine science and technology.
On December 9, 2025, the international standard ISO 20309:2025 Biotechnology — Biobanking — Requirements for deep-sea biological material was officially released under the jurisdiction of the International Organization for Standardization's Technical Committee on Biotechnology (ISO/TC 276). The standard was formulated by Qingdao MGI Tech Co., Ltd. in collaboration with institutions such as the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute (YSFRI), Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, and China National Research Institute of Food and Fermentation Industries Corporation Limited. Since the project application in December 2022, after three years of dedicated research, this standard has provided a unified "international code" for the standardized operation and management of deep-sea biological materials worldwide. The release of this standard not only fills the gap in international standards for the preservation of deep-sea biological materials but also signifies that the technical specifications and practical experiences developed within Qingdao FTZ have successfully gone global, achieving a leap from "local practice" to a "global benchmark."
Meanwhile, the Chinese national standard GB/T 46753-2025 Requirements for collection, processing and preservation of deep sea biological materials, in which the project team participated in its development, was officially released on December 2 after approval by the National Standardization Administration. The successive releases of both international and national standards within a week fully demonstrate the outstanding achievements of Qingdao FTZ in promoting collaborative innovation in marine science and technology and leading the standardized development of the industry, thereby further enhancing China's international influence and voice in the field of deep-sea science and technology.
Qingdao MGI Tech Co., Ltd. is a key enterprise in Qingdao FTZ, and its dual breakthroughs in standardization mark the crucial results of Qingdao FTZ's continuous efforts to optimize the innovation ecosystem, build high-level scientific research platforms, and facilitate the international standardization of the marine industry. Qingdao FTZ will continue to leverage its advantages in institutional innovation and open platforms to support enterprises in participating in the formulation of Chinese and international standards, promote the transformation of more scientific and technological innovations into standards, and help China take the lead in the high-quality development of marine science and technology, as well as industry.
