The construction of the first phase of Qingdao Metro Line 6 (from Xintun Road Station to Ecopark Station) was commenced on December 16, 2019, and the second phase of the project (from Qingdao West Station to Xintun Road Station) was commenced on July 2, 2022.

Phase I of Qingdao Metro Line 6 starts at Xintun Road Station, passes through Huangdao District, runs through Lingshan Bay Cultural Zone, Qingdao Economic and Technological Development Zone, International Economic Cooperation Zone and other areas, and ends at the Ecopark Station. Phase II project starts from Qingdao West Railway Station and ends at Xintun Road Station (excluding). The whole line is roughly in the shape of a reverse "C".

The total length of Qingdao Metro Line 6 is 44.343 km, and the whole line is underground. The first phase of the project is 30.8 km long, with a total of 21 stations. The second phase of the project is 13.867 km long, with a total of 10 stations. All of the stations are underground.

Qingdao Metro Line 6 Phase I Project is a major implementation project of Shandong Province in 2023. This year's work report of Qingdao Municipal Government proposed to promote the construction of 10 subway lines and realize trial operation of the first phase of Metro Line 6.
